Überblick

By participating in this international volunteer project, you can support the research team in conducting coral reef surveys and assessing coral health. This data is shared with the Thai government to help it decide on stricter protections for specific marine areas.

Coral reefs are an important underwater ecosystem because they filter excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, provide protection from the effects of tropical storms, and provide an opportunity for fish to regenerate. The corals in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand are affected by overfishing and, like most corals in the world, are affected by regular coral bleaching caused by climate change and warming of waters around the world.

Every year, during Thailand's dry season, from November to April, organization staff, interns and volunteers don fins, masks and snorkels to conduct coral conservation research in the Andaman Sea.

Snorkel in the crystal clear and turquoise waters of Thailand's Andaman Sea.

Experience the vibrant underwater world of southern Thailand and discover sea turtles, squid and anemones.

Explore the region at your leisure - so you could go scuba diving, visit different islands or the many national parks in your free time.

Location

The base is located in a small fishing village called Ban Nam Khem, which is about an hour and a half from Phuket airport and an hour and a half from the tourist resort of Khao Lak. The village offers participants the chance to experience life like a local, away from the usual busy hotspots.

The base is only a ten minute walk to the beach and a fifteen minute walk to the center of the village where you can find small markets and street vendors.

Volunteers share the house, including a living space, with staff from the organization and other participants from all over the world. On weekend, volunteers get the chance to explore the numerous stunning beaches, islands, caves and national forests that the Phang Nga region has to offer.

Typischer Tag

This project gives you an insight into some of the key issues facing coral reefs worldwide and what is being done by local and international organizations to combat this trend.

Participants will also be introduced to the scientific methods of coral research and gain an in-depth understanding of underwater life in the Andaman region.

In addition to your tasks centered around coral reefs, you will also help protect Thailand's endangered green sea turtle. So you work in a local rescue and breeding station to give the turtles a better chance of survival. Furthermore, your project will also consist of conducting tropical bird and butterfly surveys, participating in beach clean-ups and collecting data on marine litter, and holding environmental education workshops for the local community.

Freizeit

If you want to see more of Thailand's unique habitats and biodiversity, you have time in the evenings and weekends to explore the region even further. For example, book a dive in your free time to see dolphins and whale sharks, or visit Khao Sok National Park, which is home to several waterfalls, limestone caves and rainforests.

We also now include cultural/local experiences. These experiences will take place once every 4 weeks.

These activities may include:

  • Learn to make traditional Thai and Burmese food.
  • Visit the Buddhist temples of Ban Nam Khem.
  • Practice traditional Thai yoga massage.
  • Master Muay Thai self-defence techniques.
  • Raft along the Sok River.
  • Hike to hidden waterfalls.
  • Visit an untouched mangrove island.
  • Sleep in a floating river bungalow.

Unterkunft

Volunteer-Haus

The rooms are shared with a maximum of 6 participants per room. Each room has a bathroom with showers and flush toilets.

This program offers participants the opportunity to experience authentic Southern Thai cuisine while enjoying some of their own favorite dishes from home.

Breakfast can include toast, cereal and of course a wide variety of tropical fruits. On some days the participants can prepare eggs and pancakes. From Sunday to Thursday, lunches and dinners are prepared by local chefs, and on weekends participants prepare their own dishes.
