Learn about coral reef ecology and conservation issues of tropical marine organisms.
Join an international team of volunteers on this ocean conservation expedition focused on collecting vital marine data from research dives. These research results are made available to local communities and organizations to improve decision-making.
During the expedition you not only have the opportunity to learn new diving skills and conduct underwater surveys in the warm, turquoise waters of the Pacific. You can also spend time getting to know the local community and their traditional villages, teach children about environmental protection with weekly school visits, help start coral farms and discover a variety of fascinating sea creatures. Enjoy the stunning remote islands, scuba dive, snorkel and take part in traditional ceremonies.
Contribute to national efforts to conserve Fiji's delicate coral reefs and marine ecosystems while living at the research base on the stunning island of Dawasamu.
Learn about coral reef ecology and conservation issues of tropical marine organisms.
Spend time in a vibrant marine ecosystem every day.
Spot endangered species such as sharks, rays, humpback whales and whales.
Dive qualified volunteers will be trained in invertebrate, benthic or fish target species and life forms dependent on your duration.
Once fully trained in species identification, volunteers will be taught several survey techniques allowing them to become a member of the data collection survey team building an inventory of marine species in Moturiki waters.
Marine expedition volunteers will also have the chance to assist in delivering lessons focussed on environmental awareness in two schools on Moturiki Island and will participate in community based work giving workshops and helping to improve water security (rain water harvesting infra structure, compost toilets).
The project runs Monday to Friday and days are busy with presentations, dive training, point out snorkels, dives, data collection snorkels and dives, running alongside the daily chores required to keep the base operational. Once volunteers have completed their training in their allocated area, they are welcome to become survey ready in another.
Research is shared with local communities as an aid to make informed decisions about the management of their marine assets. The data is also shared with our in country partners the Fiji Locally Management Marine Area Network (FLMMA) and the Institut de Recherche pour le Developpement (IRD), the Ocean Conservancy and the Great Fiji Shark Count

This program is hosted in English, therefore we require all volunteers to be able to communicate in English.
Volunteers will spend majority of their time diving on this expedition and as a result, we require all volunteers joining us for less than 8 weeks to be at least PADI open water certified or equivalent.
Project work is conducted from Monday to Friday, giving you the weekends to relax and explore your surroundings.
There are a number of things to do in your spare time including :
We also now include cultural/local experiences. These experiences will take place once every 4 weeks.
These activities may include:
Volunteers stay in mixed gender dormitory style accommodation with shared toilets and a communal kitchen. There is mobile reception and limited electricity.
Laundry can either be done by hand or we offer a laundry service which costs around $15 FJD per bag.
All base duties and chores are shared by all volunteers including cooking and cleaning for the group. When everyone works together, it gets done quickly and effectively. Team work makes the dream work!
